Hunting Sisters – Intro and Part 1

A very close friend of mine gave me an idea for a short story/novel idea from something she did for her girls. After thinking about it for a few days and having plotlines and snippets running through my head, I decided to start writing things down and see where it takes me. So, here is the first part of The Hunting Sisters

Part 1 – “With great power comes great learning”
Chapter One – The one that almost got away..

He was running, darting from shadow to shadow, trying to throw them off his trail. Ducking into a doorway to his left he silently closed it behind him and leant against it trying to get his breath back. Outside he could hear them shouting at eachother.

“You let him get away! The one decent meal of the week and you let him escape!”
“If you had listened to me and gone left, we wouldn’t be having this argument Kay. You never listen to me! Perhaps next time if I tell you to go left you WILL do.”

Their voices trailed away into the distance. They had been too busy arguing to hear his heart beating like an express train in his chest, his ragged breathing from behind the door as he tried to keep quiet. Had he really done it? had he finally escaped them both? He couldn’t believe his luck, but it was too early for congratulations yet, he had to get out of there and fast before they backtracked and found him. Suddenly his arm lifted itself and went for the door handle. “No! it can’t be! not now, not after all this??” the thought hit him like a brick as he slowly realised he was walking towards two shadowy figures in the night. As the figures surrounded him and sunk their teeth into his neck, he screamed a silent scream in his mind before he went limp and his heart stopped.

“Your powers are getting stronger Dani, this is a new trick and i like it!” Kay said in between mouthfuls of the treat infront of them.
“Almost as strong as yours sis, I can feel more power running in me now and its growing day to day. It seems a lifetime ago since we discovered our “Talents” so to speak.” Dani was cleaning the blood off her hands as she watched her sister finish their meal. “I’ll get rid of the body this time if you’d like, you got rid of the last leftovers. Meet you back at home.”

Dani rose up and grasped the back of the mans collar, lifting him into the night sky with her as she flew off over the suburbs towards the waste plant they burned the bodies in. As she flew, the thoughts of their discoveries came back to her, could it really have only been 10 years ago since they developed the hunger??

Chapter Two – In the beginning..

Both Dani and Kay had a normal childhood really. Brought up by their loving mother alone in a backwater part of North Carolina, attending school and having normal friends. It wasn’t until they both attended their first Samhain and spoke to the elder that they even had any idea of the secret waiting on them both. Their mother only knew something was wrong and never exactly what the elder told them both. They walked into the tent as happy daughters, and walked out in tears, hugging eachother and wouldn’t let go of their mother until they were back at home.

They never did tell their mother what the elder said to them, the truth would kill her. They had hidden the truth from their mother all these years, which wasn’t easy until they brought their own home and moved out. Mum would question the late night trips, the odd occasional blood stain and the constantly dark rooms, but she accepted it as part of her daughters “finding themselves” as she put it. It was this ability to hide their tracks that made them such smart and powerful hunters. If they came back home covered in blood their secret would have to be shared with their mother and that was something they needed to avoid at all costs.

It took them a few years of mistakes and a few near misses for them to hone their skills in killing. They would pick a certain type of person, a certain location, and in some cases a diferent state. Over the years they developed and learnt their true potential and their true powers. As Day-Walkers they could still lead a normal-ish life, but no-one would ever see them eat. Not that it ever raised anyone’s suspicions. Everything was great until Kay hit her 21st birthday. Suddenly she found she could hear things miles away, she could smell the best blood from a distance, and her ability to lure men hit an all time high. This changed things for them both. With better stock came more questions about disappearances. More people asking questions and their usual methods needed to be refined. 8 years of working out a system came crashing down around them and they once again had to learn to hunt their new prey all over.

Now Dani had hit 21 herself, her powers were coming out in wierd and wonderful ways. She found that as long as they were together she could hide them both in the shadows with people walking so close they almost touched them, but never noticed them. She could control the unwilling with her mind, making them do things and go places they wouldn’t do by themselves. She also found that her hunger had gotten worse, something that she hid even from her sister. One kill was never enough any more, she had to hunt again solo just to keep herself saited.

Dropping the second of the nights kills into the blast furnace and watching it burn away she idly wiped her hands and mouth clean of blood, musing that she would have to tell Kay soon, it was starting to get impossible to hide the time it took to dispose of one body.

to be continued..
